Responsible ownership
There are many things to being a responsible sighthounds owner, however so commonly there are not adhered to, despite the fact that many are law.
You must pick up any mess your dog makes. This is a simple but completely necessary thing to do. No-one likes to tread in it! There is a maximum £1,000 fine for failing to do this.
Any dog walking in a public place should wear an identity disc with your name, address and telephone number clearly displayed (Control of Dogs Order 1992). Failure to have id can involve a £5,000 fine. The Road Traffic Act 1988 also requires all dogs should be on lead on or near roads.
It is your responsibility to make sure your hound is under your control at all times. Please do not let your hound stray. Apart from endangering themselves with traffic, your sighthound could be picked up by the dog warden as a stray and placed in a pound.
Microchipping and neutering are essential to help keep your dogs safe and stop the increasing population of stray dogs. For more information on Microchipping and Neutering, please see the relevant pages.
